We’re only a few days away from the start of Spring. And boy, are we ready for it.
It’s been a terrible winter no matter where you spent
it. It was especially bad from Texas up through New England with some of
the worst snow and ice storms on record. People are still struggling to
recover. Insurance companies are still struggling to find creative new ways to
not pay and raise rates in the process.
The finger pointing continues, but there’s less of it in the
national news. That means those of us affected less severely can forget
about it. Leave it to the actual victims to fret about. We have
enough other trouble now that the weather is getting better.
And of course, there’s the Pandemic, now “officially” a full
year upon us. How they figure a start date remains shrouded in mystery
and fueled by some of the most official-sounding guesswork you’ll ever
encounter. No one attended the first anniversary party. You had to wear a
mask.
But now, as the seasons approach change and vaccines are
available, some are rewarded with an even greater urge to welcome better
weather and a brighter future.
We were told only this week that there are fewer places
where wearing a mask is a must. The temperatures are trending toward more
acceptable.
While snow in April is not banned or unheard of, it’s
certainly curbed in severity, frequency and amount. So in general, things
are looking better in the northern hemisphere. They always do at this time of
year.
The coup attempts have been replaced in the hearts of many
of its fans by new concerns over new problems… like the plight of poor
ex-royals Meghan and Harry… and the de-gentrification of Mr. Potato
Head.
The politicians have returned to their normal lies and
corruptions, having at least temporarily forgone the more egregious ones of the
past winter. Most of them have retreated to the obscurity they’ve earned.
The first robin will show up any day now if it hasn’t
already.
Optimism!
Job availability is increasing. Wages are rising, some
propelled by competition among potential employers, some under potential for
new federal mandates. The neighborhood burger flipper will see his or her
hourly rate nearly doubled. Oh… and his hours cut by one third. The price of your
burger will rise by 20%, and the size will shrink by enough to notice.
But still, spring is more welcome than usual because there’s
more reason to welcome it than at any other time in recent memory.
The more thoughtful among us will ask how we can celebrate
sanely? How can we express gratitude and to who? How can we spread cheer?
And the more forward-looking among us are looking for new
ways to complain about the intense heat that will arrive with next summer.
