If Sheldon Adelson wants to be remembered as an
American hero, all he has to do now is… nothing. Adelson owns casinos in
Nevada. Forbes Magazine puts him at #17 on its “richest” list with a net
worth of just under $30 billion. If you want something from this guy,
it’s best not to annoy him.
The “president” needs him. And as he does to
most everyone, he’s annoyed Adelson. That puts a multimillion dollar
contributor’s contribution at risk.
How did trump honk him off? Easy. They had
a phone conversation the other day. It started off about COVID 19.
But trump quickly steered it toward his reelection campaign. According to
people who say they know about the call, trump asked why Adelson is “...not
doing enough to help with the campaign.”
Diplomacy, trump style. The master deal maker at
work.
Those same people said Adelson didn’t
respond. Our spies in Nevada say he rose slightly from his desk chair,
slipped his checkbook beneath him, then sat on it.
Adelson turned 87 years old this month.
Barring incident, he’ll live through the election. If he has the brains to
build a vast gaming empire and the heart enough to pay his employees while the
casinos were shut down, he may have the will to remain seated.
NOTES FROM ALL OVER
(PRINCETON NJ) -- Princeton and Johns Hopkins
Universities have cancelled on-campus classes for the fall semester. Many
lesser schools with smaller endowments are still opening on a limited basis.
(ROSEMONT, IL) -- The so-called Big Ten conference
of college athletics has ruled that its 12 member teams refrain from
non-conference football games this fall. Why are there 12 football teams
in the Big Ten and ten teams in the conference called the Big
Twelve?
(LYNCHBURG VA) -- The head guy at evangelical
Liberty University has “agreed” to a leave of absence. Jerry Falwell, Jr. had
been photographed with a drink in his hand, his arm around a woman not his
wife, and both their pants were unzipped.
(YELLOW SPRINGS OH) -- Distance learning works.
It worked even in the dog days before there was a tech center in every home and
a computer in every room. It was slower in those days, depending as it
did on the USPS. But not as slow is it would be now if it still depended
on the US mail.
TODAY’S QUOTE: “Rome didn’t burn in a day.” Tunisian
philosopher Sun Tsu who also invented the self-winding watch because his
sundial was always in the shade. Quotation supplied by some guy in Los Angeles
with too much time on his self-winding sundial.
